JB: The Chromatown Stage

Description

Since a good amount of the humor behind the "Ballad of Johnny Briz" comic will be inspired by "Gaki no Tsukai" [link]!! , it should come to no surprise that some of the less canonical scenes (such as an occasional Manzai-style routine) that can take place on a generic stage, much like with the stage depicted in the Wikipedia accounting.

The thought about Japanese Comedy scenes just bounced off the wall, so I'm dropping that part, but there's still a need for a generic stage for some bits.

Oh, and the blue windows on either side are video screens, and the solid blue will be changed to something else, maybe some Public Domain stock footage or some deviation that people are willing to share. #TheRubberHoseSociety, perhaps?

This stage is the background for a good number of these side strips, and might show up in the main story. It'll be upgraded by then, of course.

I don't have a whole lot to say about the actual art -- it's nondescript and, at best, mildly confusing. (Are the blue panes windows? If so, why can't you see the other halves of the ferns through them?) If you want a generic backdrop, it's acceptable, if not much more than acceptable. That said...

There are still going to be Gaki no Tsukai influences in this? Why, Dave, why? And don't say "it's slapstick" -- cartoon slapstick and Japanese physical-comedy slapstick are two very different beasts. Once again, this seems like a choice you've made just because you like something and not because it makes any sense. Are you going back to the intended audience for this work basically being you and people who like exactly the same things you do? Earlier you said you wanted to create something that would appeal to fans of classic cartoons; take a moment to think about how said fans would react to batsu games or coffee-identification competitions. They'd be confused and probably just put off. This is really not what you want.

Furthermore, a big part of this whole project is based on your assertion that classic cartoons represent a more innocent time. Do you really want to have your "innocent" cartoon characters hitting each other in the genitalia as punishment? Your work already has enough problematic adult undertones; GnT-style humor is only going to make this worse.

Also, please don't reply to this and say "I don't know who the target audience is, but I'm sure I'll find one," because that excuse has worn very thin. Works with no target audience almost never find one; the exception is stuff that's really brilliant or groundbreaking, and with all due respect, Johnny Briz just isn't.
